Did you know that 42% of children will get cavities in their baby teeth? That’s a staggering number that many parents don’t expect. It’s important, therefore, to teach them how to properly care for their teeth. Scheduling a visit with their pediatric dentist every 6 months is a great start, but you’ll have to implement a consistent oral hygiene routine at home, too. As any parent will tell you, that can be much harder than it sounds! Fortunately, your child’s dentist has put together these 4 tips that can help you keep your kid’s smile healthy. Keep reading to learn more!
Tip #1: Start Early
Though many parents wait until their child’s baby teeth grow in before they start cleansing their mouth, there’s no reason you shouldn’t start sooner. You can gently wipe their gums with a washcloth before any pearly whites pop through. Then, use a small-headed, soft-bristled toothbrush and water to gently clean them when they do. It’s recommended that you avoid giving them toothpaste until they’re about two years old because they’ll swallow it instead of spit it out. By beginning sooner rather than later, you can prevent cavities and gingivitis from developing.
Tip #2: Go Toothbrush Shopping
Giving your child a new toothbrush might be just what they need to inspire them to groom their teeth. Select one with soft bristles that won’t be abrasive on their tender gums and with a handle large enough for them to easily grasp. They come in all shapes and sizes and with designs featuring their favorite characters and heroes. Why not encourage them to participate by allowing them to pick the one they like the most? You might even find an electronic toothbrush with a light timer that lets them know how long to brush to ensure they’re getting a thorough scrub.
Tip #3: Pick a New Toothpaste
Children are often overwhelmed by powerfully minty toothpaste, so try choosing a more kid-friendly flavor. You can find a variety of options including strawberry, watermelon, bubblegum, and cinnamon. Many brands also fortify products for little mouths with fluoride which strengthens their enamel. If they like how it tastes, your child might even look forward to brushing their teeth!
Tip #4: Make It Fun
Your little one might feel less hesitant to clear bacteria from their teeth if they don’t think of it as a chore. You can make it fun by playing their favorite music while they brush to pass the time. You might also make a game of it! You might challenge them to hunt down germs or ‘sugar bugs’ or brush your teeth alongside them and see who can get them the cleanest.
If you’re still having a hard time getting your child to stick with a consistent routine, call your dentist. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience dealing with children and probably have a few ideas of their own that they could share. Then, you can enjoy peace of mind knowing you’ve done all you can to ensure your kid’s smile stays happy!
